3 Things You Can Do at Home to Improve Your Relationship While You’re in Couples Counseling

Couples Therapy Communication

When you are in couples counseling with me, you learn mindful communication for discussing important topics with your partner. Learn 3 things you can do at home to help improve your relationship

Sometimes couples save all their important discussions for when they are in session with their therapist, especially in the beginning, people are afraid of addressing certain topics at home for fear of having an argument. That’s okay for a while but if you continue to do this you will slow down your progress.

Working on your relationship at home while you’re in couples counseling is essential because it reinforces the progress made during therapy sessions. Consistent effort and small, positive changes can make a significant difference in strengthening your bond.

Below are 3 things you can do at home to support your work in session and improve your relationship:

3 Ways to Improve Your Relationship Between Sessions:

Practice Active Listening

One of the most important skills in any relationship is active listening. This means really paying attention to what your partner is saying without interrupting or planning your response while they’re talking. In therapy, I emphasize the importance of creating a safe space where each partner feels heard and valued. You can practice this at home by setting aside some time each day to talk and really listen to each other. Keep a record of important conversations and behaviors to share in session next time, successes and obstacles.

Schedule Quality Time Together

Life can get busy, but making time for each other is crucial. Plan regular date nights or activities you both enjoy. Spending quality time together helps strengthen your bond and reminds you why you fell in love in the first place. Even simple things like cooking dinner together or going for a walk can make a big difference.

Express Gratitude

It’s easy to take each other for granted, but showing appreciation can go a long way. Make it a habit to express gratitude for the little things your partner does. Whether it’s thanking them for doing the dishes or telling them you appreciate their support, these small gestures can help build a positive atmosphere in your relationship.

The only way to improve your relationship is to work through some unknown territory and discomfort.

So, don’t ALWAYS save it for your therapist’s office. Take a risk and try discussing it with your partner at home.

By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you’ll likely see improvements in your relationship, complementing the work you’re doing in couples counseling.
